General Position Information:

This position is remote, flexible schedule, and 2-5 hours of volunteer time per week. Joining the MFC Tie-Dye Inc. (Make Fashion Clean) team is an opportunity to contribute positively to society through supporting an innovative, multi-disciplinary project. Board members are typically drawn to our organization because they are passionate about environmental justice and want to get involved in such a community. Board members run our organization and offer a chance to gain professional experience as board member. Board members typically have an area of focus for their work, in addition to fulfilling general board member responsibilities such as attending monthly board meetings, voting on important issues affecting the organization, and contributing to fundraising and outreach efforts. Board members advance MFC’s mission and govern the organization and typically plan to remain engaged with MFC for at least 2 years.

Experience Sought:

MFC is currently recruiting board members and advisors with experience or expertise in the following areas: fashion and product design, finance, non-profit management, marketing, environmental advocacy, disability advocacy, sustainability and upcycling, artisan experiences, and the Ghanaian and West African context. Experience in multiple areas is welcome. MFC is looking for team members who approach their work with a social, environmental, and/or racial justice lens. Internship and Volunteer Positions:

General Position Information:

This position is remote, flexible schedule, and 5-19 hours of volunteer time per week for a time period of between 3 to 9 months. MFC Tie-Dye Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit organization on a mission to reduce global textile pollution through reuse and upcycling. We also collaborate on research, education, and art advocacy projects around issues of pollution and environmental injustice. The MFC internship program is primarily designed for students seeking placements for practicums, class projects, externally funded internships, and for-credit internships. The program is best suited for creative individuals interested in social justice, environmental justice, sustainability, human-centered design, public health, environmental science, and/or social enterprise. All internships are virtual, and MFC encourages applicants from any geographic location. Internships can begin at any time in the year. Prior internship experience is not required.

Experience Sought:

The MFC internship program is designed for multiple groups. First, it is designed for students (high school, undergraduate, and graduate) who are seeking placements for practicums, class projects, externally funded internships, and for-credit internships. Second, we will consider applicants who are not students but are looking for a professional experience that will provide relevant experience to advance their professional goals. We typically have these interns work at a lower number of hours (<5 hours per week). If you seek to be involved for more than 9 months, we will encourage you to instead apply for the project advisor position within the MFC Team.

Requirements:

Interns may join at any time of the year, but they should commit to an internship lasting 3 months to 9 months in length. Interns can commit to working an average of anywhere from 5 to 19 hours per week (note: your hours will be scheduled at your convenience and can differ by week, we are flexible with scheduling, and weeks can occasionally be skipped to accommodate other commitments, responsibilities, and needs). Interns should commit to attending a weekly mentorship meeting (note: these meetings will be scheduled at your convenience, we are flexible with scheduling, and weeks can occasionally be skipped to accommodate other commitments).

Available Internship Positions:

Note: Internship projects are co-created with interns based on the organization’s current needs and active projects and the interns learning goals and areas of interest.

  • Communications Internship: Interns will work on projects around communication, environmental education, upcycled fashion marketing, and fundraising. Examples may include developing new social media and email campaigns, web advocacy, and product launches.

  • Management & Administration Internship: Interns will support the MFC Board and Project Coordinator with specific tasks and projects that will allow them to gain experience with the operations of a non-profit organization with a social justice mission. Examples may include supporting annual report writing, developing presentations for community partners, and assisting with organization and outreach.

  • Other Positions: Other internship opportunities are available on an individual basis in areas such as fashion and design, team culture, strategic planning, and art and advocacy.

Application Process:

Complete the application at the link below. Upon completing the application, please also send your CV/resume to info@makefashionclean.org. Your application will be reviewed by the Project Coordinator and members of the MFC Board. You can expect to be contacted within 2-3 weeks about your application. If you have not received a response within that amount of time, please reach out by email. During busy times of the year, we may be slower to respond. You will be interviewed by the Project Coordinator or another MFC team member. We accept interns on a first-come, first-serve basis until our capacity is reached. We do not primarily assess qualification based on prior internship or work experience. We instead assess your intentionality, genuine interest in the work, and openness to learning. Other factors we consider are: (1) our capacity, (2) our ability to support you at the time in your desired internship for the projects you seek to work on, (3) our current activities and needs as an organization, and (4) whether you are bringing a perspective to the work that we feel will enhance MFC’s mission and deepen our work.

Access and Inclusion in the MFC Team:

  • MFC has designed our board member, project advisor, internship, and research assistant positions to be flexible toward the goal of accessibility and inclusion. Here are some aspects of our positions that are intended to increase access.

Virtual Format: Any person can join MFC from any geographic location and start anytime, reducing common barriers to participation in an internship, project advisor, or board member positions since our work primarily occurs virtually.

Flexible Design: We strive to maximize flexibility with a range of involvement opportunities so that team members can contribute alongside other professional and/or personal responsibilities. We accept applications for all of our positions on a rolling basis and can design a position around a candidate.

Mentorship and Community: Wherever possible, we strive to provide all team members with an opportunity to meet with and build community with a number of MFC team members so they have opportunities for mentorship, connection, and support.

Feedback and Accommodation Processes: We encourage feedback from all team members throughout their experience on how we can improve it and tailor it to meet their needs and also work to foster an environment where all team members not only feel comfortable speaking up about an issue but feel supported and encouraged in doing so. This commitment is reflected in our meeting approaches, surveys, and open and anonymous organization-wide feedback form. We also have an accommodation process in which any team member can request accommodations at any time for any accessibility need without providing any medical information or documentation.

Language: While the MFC team has worked in English to-date, we have team members who speak a number of other languages. The MFI Foundation team works in Ga, Twi, English, and Ewe. To discuss working in a language other than English, please reach out to the Project Coordinator by email at info@makefashionclean.org.

Recruitment: We are working to post our opportunities for involvement on multiple public platforms. We are also currently developing an expanded plan for outreach and recruitment for MFC to advance our commitment to accessibility and inclusion throughout our team-building and have contributed to related grant opportunities to expand our infrastructure to provide positions to students.

  • MFC is looking for board members and project advisors who approach their work with a social, environmental, and/or racial justice lens.

Our application for board member and project advisor positions includes multiple opportunities to share relevant lived and community experiences, which we prioritize in our evaluation of applications. We also explicitly ask in our application: “How do your perspectives on equity, anti-racism, decolonization, social justice, and/or environmental justice inform your thoughts about working on a cross-cultural environmental justice project, the impact that you seek to make in the world, and/or your values and processes around working with teams?”

The MFI Foundation board is comprised of environmental and social activists, artisans, and entrepreneurs in Ghana, most of whom live in the same area as where the MFI Foundation is physically located. Individuals interested in applying to the MFC board from Ghana may also want to consider applying to the MFI Foundation board. Contact the MFI Foundation at matildaflowenterprise@gmail.com to express interest.

  • MFC Tie-Dye Inc. seeks to host a diverse group of interns and practicum students who bring a range of professional, personal, community, and lived experiences to the work that they contribute to.

We recognize that internships and in the spaces of environmental education and innovation can lead to professional opportunities in these fields. For this reason, we are committed to recruiting and supporting interns who are under-represented in these fields due to contemporary and historical exclusion.

For the purposes of these programs, MFC defines under-represented groups in environmental science and education as those identified by the National Science Foundation (NSF): (1) persons with disabilities, (2) women, transgender, non-binary and/or gender diverse persons, and/or (3) persons from racialized and ethnic groups identified by NSF as underrepresented in sciences including persons who self-identify as Hispanic or Latino, Black or African American, and/or American Indian or Alaska Native. Given MFC's focus on environmental justice and racism and its impacts in the Global South, we also include in this definition individuals who are from socioeconomically disadvantaged communities, people from communities impacted by environmental racism, and/or individuals from or with cultural ties to the Global South.
